The butter history.


Butter is the semi-solid material that results from churning cream – a process that is depicted on Sumerian tablet from 2500b.c. a butter- filled churn was found in a 2000 year old Egyptian grave and butter was plentiful king tut’s day, when it was made from the milk of water buffalo and camels. The bible also contains many references to butter- as the product of cow’s milk. Later, the Vikings are believed to have introduced butter to Normandy, a region world- renowned for its butter.

Typically 100 grams butter contains 81 percent fat, the balance being made up of water and milk solids. The fats can be broken down to 48 grams saturated, 21 grams mono saturated, 2 grams polyunsaturated and 4-8 grams trans fats.

Butter may be salted or unsalted, which is sweet butter. The salt adds flavor and also acts as a preservative. It takes 10 kilograms of fresh cow’s milk to make 500 grams of butter and 21 pounds to make a pound of butter. Some of the uses of butter are

· Give semi-hard cheese a light coat of butter to keep them fresh and free of mould. Each time you use the cheese, coat the cut edge with butter before you re wrap it and put it back in fridge.

· Moving is often traumatic for pets as well as family members. Here’s a good way to help an adult cat adjust to the new house or apartment: spread a little butter on the top of one of its paws. Cats love the taste of butter so much they’ll keep coming back for more.
